Artist Statement
Chinese Wall Painting builds upon the artist’s earlier Toy Paintings, which employed batik textile as an alternative to European traditions of painting on canvas. The small toys around the perimeters departs are yet further from Western artistic convention. Here the animal figures invoke characters from the China lunar calendar. This dazzling multitude of swirling panels, the shape of richly colored moons, thus comes to present a depiction of time, cyclical in nature and wholly decentralized, much like the globalised world we have come to inhabit.
